Women’s stories matter. We’re committed to helping you tell yours.

Welcome to Her Stories: Writing Craft and Community at Story Circle Network

Here you can become part of a community of writing women—an inclusive, creative, and supportive community—while you develop stories and the skills to tell them.

SCN believes in the truth of all women’s voices, and the healing power to be found in writing and sharing our stories, in whatever form they are told. We believe in the deep significance of all women’s lived experience and the words that arise from it. This is how we learn from each other. We welcome you and your unique voice in poetry or prose.

Our Story

Founded in 1997, Story Circle Network (a 501(c)3 nonprofit) offers online classes, webinars, and travel programs. We publish the work of our members in a quarterly Journal, an annual anthology, and occasional other books; sponsor essay and poetry competitions; and offer the Sarton and Gilda Book Awards. We are funded by memberships, small fees, gifts, and occasional grants. Our success comes from continued support for our members’ professional growth and from the human connections that lead to fresh insight, greater skills, and personal fulfillment.

Over our quarter-century history, SCN has touched the lives of thousands of women, and thousands of stories have been told. We encourage you to explore this Substack and our website to discover all the ways that we sustain our mission:

Story Circle Network is dedicated to helping women share the stories of their lives, and to raising public awareness of the importance of women's personal histories. Our activities empower women to tell their stories in their own voices, discover their identities through their stories, and choose to be the authors of their own lives.

Our Substack

  • Here at Her Stories, brave writing women share the truth of their lives in True Words from Real Women. These day-in-the-life stories will move, amuse, teach, and inspire you at the same time that they make an important contribution to women’s history.

  • In StoryCraft: Writers Write about Writing, SCN teachers and published authors offer experienced wisdom and techniques for improving your writing and your writing life. These women are down-to-earth practitioners of the craft and art of using your voice, of telling your story, of finding your way.

  • Reviews & Interviews points you to your next great read or next favorite author. You can’t be a writer without being a reader, and our reviews of indie-published books will help you explore new voices. If you especially want to support books by, for, and about women, books that are from small presses and self-published authors, our reviews are a great place to begin browsing the stacks. And if you like to write reviews, you’ll find our guidelines here.

  • We share SCN’s news and events in our informative monthly Flash. This quick-to-read newsletter contains updates on all of our mission-based activities, along with special opportunities for SCN members and nonmembers.

We hope you’ll subscribe to Her Stories. And we’d be very glad if you’d consider joining SCN’s vibrant community. If you become a member of Story Circle Network, you will automatically receive a paid (comped) subscription to Her Stories.

We’re here to help you write your stories. And your stories will enrich the lives and history of women. Together, we’ll do good work. So glad you found us!
